The first BitBox hardware wallet was launched in 2015 by Bitcoin pioneers Douglas Bakkum and Jonas Schnelli, who met at a Swiss Bitcoin meetup. Recognizing the need for secure self-custody solutions, they developed a hardware wallet to address this gap, laying the foundation for BitBox.
Douglas, BitBox CEO, holds a PhD in neuro engineering and drives the mission to simplify Bitcoin self-custody without compromising security or privacy. Jonas, a former Bitcoin Core maintainer, brought his expertise in open-source technologies and decentralization, shaping the open-source ethos of BitBox. Now an advisor, he continues to advocate for secure, private Bitcoin use.
